To help you get started, I’ve put together a few go-to sketching ideas that have worked for me time and again. When you’re heading out sketching, sometimes the pressure of what to actually draw can be a barrier to getting started. I’ve picked out a few of my go-to subjects to give you some ideas, but remember the key to successful sketching is in finding something that you personally find interesting.

Vistas

I love a good rooftop and find there is no better place to start drawing than up high, with a view of a city. You can zoom in on details or, if desired, explore the entire vista. Urban sketchers relish the opportunity to draw above ground level, and the elevated position offers the artist unparalleled freedom and a new perspective.

In Andalucía, rooftops in Málaga offer sunlit views over the Mediterranean and the iconic Alcazaba fortress—an ideal spot to capture light, shadow, and sweeping cityscapes.

Mundanity

Often a scene that you wouldn’t ordinarily look at twice will be amazing in sketch form—ideas like people sitting outside a small café in the sun drinking coffee, students doing their washing in a laundromat, or a dog resting under a table. All of these scenes might look quite uninteresting as photographs, but drawing can bring a level of artistic gravitas to everyday views.

Sketching opportunities are everywhere, especially where you don’t expect them! The bustling markets of Córdoba or the quiet lanes of Alhaurín el Grande provide rich, everyday moments perfect for sketching.

Travelling

Travel and sketching go hand in hand. Buses, trains, planes, and cars are all great sketching subjects. Everything you pass on the way from A to B offers new opportunities for the urban sketcher, and then when you arrive, there will be a plethora of new people, architecture, streets, and nature to explore.

Whether you’re traveling across Andalucía or on your daily commute, always remember to pack your drawing kit! On our art holiday, there are scenic drives to mountain villages like Mijas, where you can capture stunning views and quaint streets.

Architectural Mayhem

Old, new, classical, brutalist—the more varied the architectural styles in a sketch, the better. A scene where the architecture tells the story of the city will always be interesting and challenging.

In London, you might combine Sir Christopher Wren’s historic buildings with Norman Foster’s modern towers. In Andalucía, the rich history is just as compelling—from the Moorish arches of the Mezquita-Catedral in Córdoba to the whitewashed charm of Mijas and the Art Deco buildings in Málaga.

5 Minute Thumbnail Sketches Exercises

If you haven’t sketched for a while, doing a few quick sketches is a great way to loosen up and build your confidence. These exercises focus on working quickly and challenging yourself to use different media. The goal is to capture the essence of your subject swiftly—without worrying about perfect accuracy.

Try using the opposite of what you’d normally choose to sketch a subject. For example, if the scene is delicate and complex, try using a fat pen or a large chunk of charcoal instead of fine liners. Select three or four different types of media—pen, pencil, charcoal, brush pen, for example—and work in a sketchbook no larger than A4 to keep your focus sharp and your speed up.

Find a location with multiple angles and views. Vary the scenes in your sketches—a close-up of a plant or tree in one, and a specific architectural feature in another. Allow yourself five minutes per sketch to capture each view.

Exercise 1

Choose your first medium, set a timer for five minutes, and start making marks immediately, beginning with the key structural shapes.
Focus on small areas within the larger scene and fill these in quickly. Use natural lines—like those of buildings or lampposts—to frame your wider composition.
Keep your eyes on the subject for most of your sketching time. The more you look, the better your sketches will be. After getting the basic shapes down, add details to build up your drawing.
Just before time runs out, add any final touches—tone, shadows, or perhaps a figure to bring life. Try to include as many details as possible but don’t labour your marks—keep your movements quick and relaxed.
When the timer sounds, turn the page, reset it, and repeat with a different subject and medium. Do this three or four times and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your sketchbook fills up and how each medium makes you approach the subject differently.

Exercise 2

Repeat the process with a different medium, such as a brush pen.

A Christmas Table: Food as a Doorway into Culture & Place

At Christmas, much of what we remember gathers around the table — the clatter of plates, familiar scents, recipes brought out once a year.

Food holds memory — of people, place, ritual and creativity — and often a flavour stays with us long after a journey ends. This is why food sits at the heart of our journeys: eating well, locally, and with intention is one of the simplest ways to understand a culture.

This Christmas, I’m sharing a few edible inspirations from southern Spain to northern India, with festive recipes to try at home.

Andalucía: slow food, shared tables

In Andalucía, meals are rarely rushed. Food is shaped by the land and the seasons, by centuries of cultural exchange, and by a deep-rooted belief that eating is a social act. Conversations stretch, plates are shared, and simplicity is treated with respect.

One of our favourite places to eat is Fountainhead Restaurant — a small, thoughtful restaurant where local ingredients are handled with care and imagination. The cooking is rooted in Andalucía, yet quietly creative: generous, unfussy, and deeply connected to place. It’s the kind of food that stays with you not because it is elaborate, but because it feels honest.

If you’re inspired to bring a little of Andalucía into your own kitchen this Christmas, here are two traditional festive sweets — both made to be shared.

✦ Recipe: Andalusian Pestiños (Honey & Sesame Fritters)

A Christmas classic across southern Spain, pestiños are lightly fried pastries scented with citrus and sesame, then dipped in honey. They are usually made in batches and offered generously.

Ingredients

Plain flour
Olive oil
Orange peel
Sesame seeds
A pinch of salt
Honey

Method

Gently warm olive oil with strips of orange peel and sesame seeds, then remove from the heat and strain
Mix the infused oil with flour and salt to form a soft dough.
Shape small pieces and fry in hot oil until golden.
Warm honey separately and dip the fritters while still hot. Leave to set before serving.

Recipe: Polvorones (Andalusian Christmas Shortbread)

Polvorones are crumbly, melt-in-the-mouth biscuits traditionally wrapped in paper and served after Christmas meals with coffee or sweet wine.

Ingredients

Plain flour
Ground almonds
Butter or lard
Icing sugar
Cinnamon
Lemon zest

Method

Lightly toast the flour in the oven until pale golden, then cool.
Mix with ground almonds, sugar, cinnamon and lemon zest.
Rub in the butter or lard to form a soft dough.
Shape, bake gently, and dust with icing sugar once cooled.

Jaipur & Rajasthan: spice, colour and culinary craft

If Andalucía offers restraint and simplicity, Jaipur delights through richness and complexity

Food in Rajasthan is deeply entwined with craft. Spices are blended like pigments, recipes are passed down through generations, and techniques are refined over time. Even the most everyday dish carries history and intention.

The New York Times recently published a beautiful article exploring Jaipur’s food culture — capturing the joy, colour and generosity found in its kitchens, streets and dining rooms. It’s a wonderful reminder that food, like art, tells stories of trade, tradition and place.

Inspired by this, here is a simple, festive Rajasthani-style accompaniment that works beautifully on a Christmas table.

✦ Recipe: Rajasthani-Spiced Carrots with Cumin & Orange

This warm, aromatic dish takes inspiration from Rajasthani spice combinations and pairs well with roasted vegetables or festive mains.

Ingredients

Carrots, sliced lengthways
Cumin seeds
Ground coriander
A pinch of chilli (optional)
Orange zest
Olive oil or ghee
Salt

Method

Heat oil or ghee in a pan and gently toast cumin seeds until fragrant.
Add carrots, coriander and chilli, stirring to coat.
Cook until just tender, then finish with orange zest and salt.
Serve warm, scattered with fresh herbs if you like.

Indian block printing is one of the oldest and most evocative textile traditions in the world — and it remains vibrant and relevant today. At its heart, Indian block printing is about more than just fabric and pattern; it is a layered conversation between artisan and cloth, tradition and innovation, history and beauty.

A Craft with Deep Roots

Indian block printing has ancient origins, with evidence dating back over 4,000 years. Fabric fragments found in Old Cairo and mordant-dyed scraps from the Indus Valley point to its long history.

These richly patterned textiles travelled far, prized across social classes—from royal robes to everyday cloth—and carried along trade routes from China to North Africa. Colour and pattern spoke a universal language.

From Crisis to Revival: The Evolution of Indian Block Printing

Indian block printing faced decline with the rise of industrialisation and the loss of royal patronage around Independence in 1947. But in the 1960s and ’70s, Western travellers helped spark a revival, drawn to its handmade beauty. Young Indian designers began mixing traditional techniques with modern style. By the 1990s, as India reconnected with global markets, block printing experienced a fresh wave of popularity both locally and abroad.

The Geography of Print: Regional Styles in Indian Block Printing

Indian block printing is shaped by place, with each region developing its own style. Sanganer is known for fine floral motifs on white cotton, while Akola’s Dabu prints use mud-resist for bold, earthy textures.

Pipar City creates deep tones with black clay and indigo, and Bagru stands out for its global legacy. Each fabric reflects the land it comes from—its water, soil and rhythm of life.

Bagru: The Soul of Natural Dye Block Printing

Just outside Jaipur, Bagru has been home to the Chhipa community and their block printing tradition for over 400 years. Using hand-carved wooden blocks and natural dyes like pomegranate and madder, artisans create richly layered fabrics shaped by local water, soil and sun.

The process is slow and deeply tactile—cloth is scoured, dyed, sun-dried and printed by hand, one block at a time. Today, younger artisans continue the tradition while bringing fresh ideas, blending heritage with modern design to keep the craft alive and evolving.

The Community Behind The Craft

The technique has long been a collaborative craft, with printers, dyers and washermen working in harmony. Families passed down skills, with children learning by watching their elders and carving blocks in home workshops.

While some younger generations seek new paths, communities around Jaipur—like Bagru and Sanganer—keep the tradition alive, balancing growing demand with the care of handmade work.

When you think of India, you may think of the vibrant colours, intricate patterns and centuries-old traditions. But there are many other unexpected sources of inspiration to spark your creativity that you may not have anticipated.

Our Art & Craft Tour of Rajasthan is an invitation to slow down and reconnect with your creativity, working with colour, texture and traditional techniques under the expert guidance of artist Charlotte Gerrard.

As well as the colour we see in saris, at festivals, or on painted temples, often it’s the small, everyday details that spark that creative inspiration:
